The cursor blinks. You have an idea. At least, you think you do.

You write the first sentence. It feels awkward. The second one is even worse. You delete both.

For a moment, you wonder if you’ve simply run out of things to say.

Five years ago, you would’ve stared at the screen a little longer.

Today, you open ChatGPT:

“Write me a better introduction.”

Thirty seconds later, the page is full. Writer’s block solved.

Or so it seems. Because I don’t think AI is making us worse writers.

I think it’s changing something much more important. It’s changing how original ideas are born.

Most people think writing begins with words. It doesn’t.

Writing begins with thinking. The page is simply where those thoughts become visible.

That’s why good writing has never been about typing quickly or finding clever sentences.

It’s about discovering something you didn’t know before you started.

The best essays aren’t written from certainty. They’re written toward it.

That’s why the first draft is almost always disappointing. It’s supposed to be.

Original ideas rarely arrive fully formed. They begin as fragments.

A question you can’t answer. A sentence that doesn’t quite work. An argument that contradicts itself.

Most people mistake that feeling for failure.

In reality, it’s often the beginning of the creative process.

Psychologists have long described this as the incubation effect, the idea that creative insights often emerge after you’ve struggled with a problem, not before.

<a class="image-link image2 is-viewable-img" target="_blank" Weak. Easy to dismiss.

The temptation is to replace it with a better one.

Ask AI. Read another article. Start over.

But originality isn’t something you download, it’s something you cultivate.

Every time you abandon an unfinished thought too early, you don’t just lose a paragraph. You lose the possibility of discovering where that thought might have taken you.

This is why writer’s block is often misunderstood.

It isn’t always the inability to write. More often, it’s the inability to tolerate an unfinished idea.

The greatest writers weren’t people who never got stuck. They were people who stayed stuck a little longer. They trusted that confusion wasn’t a dead end. It was part of the process.

Today, we’re surrounded by tools that promise to eliminate that process.

Need an introduction? Generate one.

Need a conclusion? Generate one.

Need a better sentence? Generate ten.

None of these tools are bad, in fact, they’re extraordinary.

But every shortcut comes with a hidden trade-off.

The easier it becomes to skip the struggle, the easier it becomes to skip the discovery. That’s the paradox of AI writing.

It can make your writing better while quietly making your thinking shallower.

Not because the technology lacks intelligence, but because it removes the friction where originality is born.

Think about your favorite author.

What do you actually admire? Is it the perfect sentence? Or is it the years of thinking behind it?

The experiences. The doubts. The rewrites.

The countless bad ideas that eventually became one remarkable one.

Readers don’t just connect with beautiful words. They connect with evidence that another human being has wrestled with something real.

Interestingly, research suggests we sense this almost instinctively.

In a recent study involving more than 27,000 participants, people consistently rated poems and short stories lower when they believed they had been written by AI—even when the text itself was identical. It wasn’t necessarily the quality they rejected. It was the perceived absence of a human mind behind the words.

Perhaps that’s because great writing has never simply been about producing sentences. It’s about revealing a way of seeing the world.

A machine can imitate a voice. It cannot imitate the life that shaped it.

We often ask whether AI will replace writers.

I think we’re asking the wrong question.

The more important question is this: will writers slowly stop thinking for themselves?

Because that’s the real danger. AI doesn’t just offer answers. It offers them before you’ve had enough time to discover your own.

And the first answer is rarely the most interesting one. The second usually isn’t either.

Originality often appears somewhere after the obvious ideas have run out.

If you stop digging too early, you’ll never reach it.

This doesn’t mean you should stop using AI. I certainly won’t.

It’s one of the most remarkable tools ever invented. But I’ve learned to treat it like an editor, not a co-author.

Editors improve ideas, they shouldn’t create them.

So if you’ve been struggling to write lately, don’t assume you’ve run out of creativity.

Maybe you’ve simply stopped giving your ideas enough time to grow.

Before you ask AI for a better paragraph, ask yourself one more question.

Before you search for someone else’s opinion, spend another ten minutes exploring your own.

Before you delete that awkward sentence, ask whether it’s actually pointing toward something you haven’t understood yet.

You might be surprised by what happens next.

If AI is changing how we write, it doesn’t mean we should stop using it.

It means we should become more intentional about when we use it.

Here are five habits I’ve adopted:

1. Don’t let AI have the first thought.

Your first draft should belong to you.

It will be messy. You’ll write weak sentences, contradict yourself and leave ideas half-finished. That’s the point.

The first draft isn’t about writing well. It’s about discovering what you actually think.

Only after that should AI help improve clarity, grammar or structure. Not your ideas.

2. Give your ideas time to grow.

Remember the seed.

If you keep digging it up to see whether it’s growing, you’ll eventually conclude it never worked.

Ideas are no different. Not every paragraph has to make sense immediately. Some ideas need a walk. Others need a night’s sleep.

Resist the urge to replace them too quickly. You might be surprised by what they become.

3. Protect your voice.

Your writing shouldn’t sound like a corporate blog or an instruction manual, unless your dream has always been to sound like your company's Terms & Conditions.

Write the way you would explain an idea to a curious friend.

Simple. Conversational. Human.

If AI rewrites a sentence and it no longer sounds like something you would actually say, delete it.

Your voice is more valuable than a perfect sentence.

4. Read more humans.

Your writing is shaped by what you read.

If most of your input comes from AI-generated content, don’t be surprised when your own writing starts sounding generic.

Read books. Read essays. Read writers with opinions, imperfections and personality. Read Substack.

Not to copy their words, but to remind yourself what authentic writing feels like.

5. Publish before it feels perfect.

Every article feels unfinished to its author.

Publish it anyway. Your readers will teach you far more than endless editing ever will.

The goal isn’t perfection. It’s progress.

Every article sharpens your voice a little more than the last.

To conclude,

Artificial intelligence may become the greatest writing tool ever created. But writing was never just about producing words. It was about wrestling with an idea long enough for it to become your own.

Every time you let a machine think before you do, you give up a small part of that process. Not because AI is replacing your creativity, but because it tempts you to abandon it too early.

The next time you’re staring at a blank page, resist the urge to ask AI for your first sentence.

Write the bad one.

Because in a world where anyone can generate words, the rarest thing you can still offer is a thought that is unmistakably your own.

— noir.

♡ Like this piece if you've ever stared at a blinking cursor for longer than you'd like to admit!
<p class="button-wrapper" People walked for hours with nothing to entertain them. They waited. They sat in silence. They stared at rivers, fields, campfires, and ceilings.

Today, boredom lasts about three seconds.

A queue forms. You check your phone.

An elevator arrives. You check your phone.

A conversation slows down. You check your phone.

The modern world has turned boredom into a problem that must be eliminated immediately. That may be a mistake. Because boredom was never a design flaw. It was a feature.

Psychologists define boredom as the uncomfortable feeling that arises when our current environment fails to provide sufficient stimulation. Most people experience it as frustration. Something to escape.

But evolution rarely creates emotions without a purpose.

Hunger pushes you toward food. Fear pushes you away from danger. Loneliness pushes you toward connection. Boredom pushes you toward exploration.

Our ancestors lived in environments where remaining mentally engaged improved survival. The individuals who became curious, investigated new opportunities, explored unfamiliar territory, and searched for better solutions often gained an advantage.

Boredom was the signal that told the brain:

“There may be something more valuable than what you’re currently doing.”

The feeling exists for a reason.

The irony is that modern technology provides a shortcut around that mechanism. Whenever boredom appears, your phone immediately offers an alternative.

Not a meaningful alternative. Just a stimulating one. A video. A notification. A headline. A message. The discomfort disappears instantly. Simulating the future. Connecting unrelated ideas. Making sense of your life.

Many of humanity’s breakthroughs emerged from these periods of mental wandering. Not during stimulation, but during stillness.

Researchers studying creativity consistently find that periods of mind-wandering increase creative problem-solving. The brain requires idle moments to connect information gathered throughout the day.

A machine works best when constantly active. The human mind does not.

The consequences of eliminating boredom may therefore be deeper than reduced productivity.

You are not merely losing time.

You may be losing access to the mental state in which long-term goals, original ideas, and personal insights emerge.

This may help explain a strange paradox.

Never before have humans consumed so much information. moment with entertainment, luxury, excess, and distraction. Instead, he repeatedly sought solitude.

His private journal, later published as Meditations, contains page after page of reflection, introspection, and deliberate thought.

He understood something many people have forgotten. Silence is not empty, it is where clarity comes from. The greatest ideas rarely arrive while scrolling through an endless feed.

They arrive during a walk, while staring out of a window, during a quiet evening. In the space between distractions.

The tech industry often describes its products as tools that save time.

In reality, many of them compete to occupy every unused second of human attention.

The business model is simple. If boredom disappears, engagement increases. If engagement increases, profits increase.

Your silence has become a commodity. Your attention has become a marketplace. And boredom is the last obstacle standing in the way.

The next time boredom appears, try a simple experiment.

Resist the urge to reach for your phone. Take out a notebook instead. Write for ten minutes. Not for an audience. Not for social media. For yourself.

Many of the reflections that became Meditations began as private thoughts captured in moments of solitude.

You may discover that boredom was never the problem. The inability to sit with it was.

Perhaps the real danger is not that smartphones make us distracted. Perhaps the real danger is that they make it increasingly difficult to be alone with ourselves.

Because every major decision, every meaningful ambition, and every honest confrontation with reality begins in the same place.

A moment of stillness.

And stillness is becoming an endangered species.

— Noir.

<span data-color="rgb(54, 55, 55)" stimulation. Deep work feels boring. Long-term plans feel too slow. So you start things, lose focus, quit, and repeat the cycle year after year.

The good news is that this isn’t permanent. You can regain control of your attention.

And you should.

Your brain was never designed for what your phone is doing to it.

Dopamine is the chemical that drives you to seek rewards. It spikes most when there is uncertainty. You check something without knowing what you’ll find, discover something interesting, and your brain records a simple lesson: do that again!

This mechanism helped your ancestors survive. The people who felt rewarded for investigating every rustling bush, every unfamiliar path, and every potential food source were more likely to stay alive. Curiosity was adaptive.

Today, that same wiring is being weaponized against you.

Social media companies understand that the reward doesn’t need to be frequent. It only needs to be unpredictable.

Most posts are mediocre. Most videos are forgettable. Most notifications are meaningless. But every now and then, you find something that makes you laugh, shocks you, teaches you something, or validates your beliefs.

That tiny reward is enough.

So you keep doomscrolling through hours of Brainrot to find a few seconds of treasure.

"Brainrot" is internet slang describing the perceived mental decline or loss of focus caused by excessive consumption of low-value, overstimulating online content.

You tell yourself you’re looking for information. In reality, you’re pulling a digital slot machine.

The difference is that a casino eventually closes. Your feed never does.

A shocking study by Uswitch found that the average American spends 1,366 hours per year on social media alone. That works out to roughly 3.7 hours every day.

Now let’s put that into perspective.

There are 24 hours in a day. If you sleep 7 hours per night, you’re awake for about 17 hours. Spending 3.7 of those 17 waking hours on social media means that nearly 22% of your conscious life is spent scrolling through apps.

More than one out of every five waking hours.

Over a year, that’s the equivalent of 57 full days spent on social media. Not working. Not learning. Not building relationships. Not pursuing goals. Just scrolling.

If that describes your daily routine, it may be worth asking yourself a difficult question: If almost a quarter of your waking life is spent consuming other people’s content, what could you have achieved if that time had been invested in your own life instead?

A dopamine system that evolved to fire occasionally now gets activated hundreds of times per day, every day, for years.

And many people wonder why they can no longer focus on a book, sit alone with their thoughts, or work on a goal that takes longer than thirty seconds to reward them.

The common assumption is that every dopamine hit simply adds more motivation.

Reality works differently.

Most people believe their phone gives them energy. In reality, it borrows motivation from tomorrow.

Every unexpected reward—a viral post, a notification, a funny video—creates a brief surge of dopamine. But after the peak comes a decline. In many cases, dopamine levels temporarily fall below their normal baseline, leaving you feeling bored, restless, and craving the next hit of stimulation. Repeat that cycle hundreds of times per day and your brain spends more and more time recovering from stimulation rather than pursuing meaningful goals.
<div that require patience, effort, and delayed gratification.

Endless novelty doesn’t create endless motivation.

It gradually trains your brain to expect constant rewards while making ordinary life feel increasingly unrewarding.

The effects don’t stop at dopamine itself.

Repeated overstimulation can reduce the number of dopamine receptors available in the brain. In simple terms, your brain becomes less responsive to the rewards it once enjoyed. Researchers have observed this pattern across multiple forms of addiction, including excessive internet use.

Brain scans show that people with more severe addictive behaviors tend to have fewer dopamine receptors and lower activity in the prefrontal cortex—the region responsible for focus, planning, self-control, and decision-making.

<a attention back into the loop. Research suggests that smartphone notifications can reduce the amount of cognitive control people deploy during routine tasks, making it easier to slip into habitual behaviors.

In other words, notifications don’t need to force you to pick up your phone. They only need to interrupt your attention long enough to remind you that a potential reward might be waiting.

Turn off every non-essential notification, most weren’t important anyway.

The third step is to create distance.

Keep your phone out of your bedroom. Don’t make it the first thing you see in the morning or the last thing you touch before sleep. The easier your phone is to reach, the harder it becomes to ignore.

For some people, especially those struggling with anxiety or depressive symptoms, the phone can become more than a distraction. It becomes a source of comfort, reassurance, or validation. The problem is that what feels like relief in the moment often reinforces the habit, making it even harder to break over time.

None of these changes are dramatic. That’s the point.

The researchers who successfully reduced problematic smartphone use didn’t rely on motivation. They changed the environment. They made the dopamine machine slightly less rewarding, slightly less visible, and slightly harder to access.

And it worked.

The goal isn’t to eliminate dopamine. The goal is to stop outsourcing it to an algorithm. Because every hour you reclaim from your feed is an hour you can invest in your own life instead.

To conclude,

Your phone doesn’t care about your goals. It doesn’t care about the book you want to write, the business you want to build, the skills you want to learn, or the relationships you want to strengthen. Every hour spent consuming somebody else’s life is an hour not spent building your own.

The question is simple: how many more years are you willing to give away?

- Noir.

♡ Like this piece if you won't be throwing your life away over dopamine!

Subscribe now

Share

Disrupting Mortality

Can technology overcome humanity's oldest constraint?

noir.

“Forever young, I want to be forever young” - Alphaville (1984)

The quest for immortality is as old as time. In the Garden of Eden, God promised Adam and Eve eternal life on one condition: do not eat from the Tree of Knowledge. But temptation won. A serpent deceived Eve, Adam followed suit, and the forbidden fruit was eaten. This “Fall of Man” sealed their fate. An angry God banished them, declaring: “Dust you are, and to dust you shall return.”

Goodbye immortality, hello mortality.

This obsession echoes across almost every ancient culture. Take the Epic of Gilgamesh, written around 2100 BC in ancient Mesopotamia. Gilgamesh—a king two-thirds god and one-third human—desperately sought eternal life. He tracked down Utnapishtim, a survivor of the great flood, and successfully retrieved the plant of youth. But while the king napped, a snake stole it away, leaving Gilgamesh to return home and face his mortal end.

For millennia, humans simply couldn’t escape this fate. In fact, if I were to ask you what the global life expectancy was as recently as the year 1900, what would you say? 50? 60?

The truth is, it was just 32 years old.

<a class="image-link image2 is-viewable-img" target="_blank" Historically, living to 30 was more than good enough. Yet today, we have completely shattered those biological limits. And because we have conquered the basic threats to survival, the ancient dream of defeating death has suddenly become a hot topic once again.

But there is a catch. This modern pursuit of extreme longevity is no longer a spiritual quest—it has become the ultimate playground for the ultra-wealthy and the hyper-powerful.

We saw a fascinating example of this last year. During a military parade in Beijing, a rare hot-mic moment caught Chinese President Xi Jinping and Russian President Vladimir Putin in a private chat. Flanked by interpreters, Putin mused about how biotechnology and organ transplants might allow people to grow younger and “even achieve immortality.” Xi agreed, laughing that at age 70, a person is “still a child,” and predicted humans will soon routinely live to 150.

<a class="image-link image2 is-viewable-img" the snake, rewrite the rules of evolution, and hold onto their power forever.

But it isn’t just world leaders chasing this dream; it is primarily the tech moguls and venture capitalists who are placing astronomical bets on it today. In recent years, a massive network of billionaires has emerged, flooding the longevity space with capital. This is no longer a niche hobby, but a serious multi-billion-dollar industry where the average fundraising round has grown by more than 20% over the past decade to nearly $43 million per deal, according to WSJ estimates. The sums these tech giants are investing to rewind the biological clock are staggering. Altos Labs raised $3 billion—the most of any identified longevity company—to develop technology aimed at rejuvenating cells.

Meanwhile, Brian Armstrong’s fundraising for his cell-reprogramming company, NewLimit, included a $130 million round backed by the funds of fellow billionaires Vinod Khosla and Peter Thiel. Additionally, hundreds of millions of dollars are pouring into other pioneers; the artificial-intelligence drug discovery company Insilico Medicine raised more than $500 million to treat multiple age-related diseases , and BioAge Labs raised $559 million to develop drugs targeting the diseases of aging. inevitability.

A lot of people already make it past the age of 100 and they are healthy, so there is no reason that shouldn't be achievable for all of us. For this modern elite, mortality is no longer a natural law, but simply a technical error in our code waiting to be solved. They are following the money and the science to rewrite the rules of evolution, chasing the ultimate form of inequality: a world where biological age can be bought, and where the wealthiest do not just own the most capital, but also the most time.

But to truly achieve this, these billionaires aren’t just fighting evolution—they are fighting a mathematical law. In biogerontology, there is a concept known as Gompertz’ Law of Mortality. Formulated in the 19th century, this law shows that once a human hits the age of 30, their probability of dying doubles roughly every eight years. It is a brutal, exponential curve built into the very fabric of our biology.

<picture></picture>

<g></g><polyline points="15 3 21 3 21 9"></polyline><polyline points="9 21 3 21 3 15"></polyline><line x1="21" x2="14" y1="3" y2="10"></line><line x1="3" x2="10" y1="21" y2="14"></line>

For thousands of years, this mathematical wall has remained undefeated. Every monumental leap in human civilisation has been paved by a breakthrough invention that acted as an external catalyst, forcing our bodies and minds to adapt. These inventions did not just make life easier; they fundamentally altered the trajectory of human evolution.

However, we have recently crossed a threshold into an entirely uncharted epoch. With the rise of Artificial Intelligence, we have created the first tool that appears to participate in the process of its own improvement. But as this new tool takes over the heavy lifting of cognition, a landmark study suggests that we may be facing a terrifying evolutionary reversal. For the first time, our own creation may be eroding the very critical thinking skills that allowed us to build it.

To understand the profound danger of this shift, one must first look back to the very spark that ignited human intellect: the control of fire and the subsequent invention of cooking. Millions of years ago, our hominid ancestors, such as Homo erectus, were physically limited by their diet. Surviving on tough, raw, fibrous vegetation and carcass scraps required immense physical energy to chew and digest, meaning biological resources were heavily allocated to maintaining a massive digestive tract.

<a class="image-link image2 is-viewable-img" target="_blank" As outlined by Harvard anthropologist Richard Wrangham in his seminal Cooking Hypothesis, cooking acted as a form of technological pre-digestion. By breaking down complex starches and denaturing proteins before food even touched the tongue, cooking unlocked an unprecedented density of calories while drastically reducing the metabolic energy required to process it.

This energetic surplus triggered what we call encephalization—the drastic increase in brain size relative to body mass. Over generations, the human gut shrank because it no longer needed to do the grueling work of digesting raw matter, allowing the body to reallocate those massive caloric resources directly to powering the rapid expansion of the cerebral cortex. The Cooking Hypothesis suggests that fire and cooking may have played a crucial role in the expansion of the human brain.

Millennia later, that expanded cognitive capacity gave rise to a second civilizational rewrite: the Neolithic Revolution, commonly known as the Agricultural Revolution. By transitioning from nomadic hunting and gathering to settled farming, humanity fundamentally altered its environment. The domestication of plants and animals allowed for resource surpluses, which birthed permanent settlements, specialized labor, and complex societies. This shift dramatically rewired the human cognitive landscape, forcing the mind to adapt to a world governed by cycles, systems, and structures rather than immediate survival instincts.

Agriculture demanded long-term planning, the mathematical calculation of land boundaries, and the creation of proto-cuneiform writing systems to keep track of trade and storage. It forced the individual human brain to integrate into a massive, collective network of shared knowledge, shifting our evolution from a purely biological struggle to cultural and systemic development. Every tool introduced during this era, from the simple plow to the earliest written ledgers, required active intellectual mastery and rigorous cognitive engagement from the human user.

Although many technologies reduced specific cognitive burdens, they generally required humans to remain active participants in the process of reasoning. When Johannes Gutenberg invented the movable-type printing press, it democratized knowledge, but it still required the human reader to actively decode symbols, synthesize arguments, and form independent judgments. When Google introduced its PageRank search algorithm, it transformed how we accessed data, but it still forced the user to engage in a multi-step critical process. A user had to formulate a specific query, scan a list of diverse sources, evaluate credibility, and actively piece together information to form an answer. In all these historical instances, technology served as a scaffold for human intelligence, requiring us to remain the ultimate arbiters of truth and logic.

Now, however, we have introduced Artificial Intelligence into the human story, and the evolutionary contract has completely changed. The warnings are beginning to emerge in measurable ways. A recent study by researchers at the MIT Media Lab, led by Nataliya Kosmyna, mapped the neurological reality of this shift by tracking the brain activity of young adults writing essays. The subjects were split into three groups: those writing entirely on their own, those using Google Search, and those relying on ChatGPT.

<a the tasks. This is compared across three groups: the AI group (LLM), the Google group (Search Engine), and the group that worked entirely on their own (Brain-only). The stars ( to *) indicate how statistically reliable and significant the differences between these groups are | By MIT

The data returned by the electroencephalograms (EEGs) revealed a stark, chilling divergence. While the independent writers and the Google Search group exhibited vibrant neural connectivity, the AI users displayed markedly lower neural connectivity and engagement than the other groups. The complex “traffic” of information between brain regions—measured through dynamic Direct Transfer Function analysis—was markedly reduced in the AI group. Specifically, brain-wave patterns associated with creative ideation, memory formation, and deep semantic processing, were severely dampened. Unlike a search engine, which forces the human mind to navigate, evaluate, and actively synthesize data, the generative machine assumed a far greater share of the cognitive process. The findings suggest that some higher-order cognitive processes may have been partially offloaded to the AI system.

This neurological passivity signals a deeper, more atmospheric shift in the human condition. We are moving into a cold, noir reality where understanding is increasingly separated from effort. For millennia, our tools were mirrors of our own capabilities—sharper claws, stronger backs, faster eyes. But AI is an entirely different entity. It is a black box that increasingly reasons on our behalf, a quiet force of convenience that encourages us to outsource the very mechanics of thought.

When the MIT participants were asked to revisit their essays weeks later without the tool, the ChatGPT users displayed significantly weaker recall of their own work. The findings suggest that cognitive offloading may have weakened the encoding of those ideas into memory. The tech delivered an efficient, polished product, but it left the human host hollowed out.

<a class="image-link image2 is-viewable-img" biological fuel to physically expand our brains, and agriculture gave us the societal architecture to expand our knowledge. Now, we are willingly handing that symbolic intellectual fire back. While our brains will not physically shrink, our overreliance on these tools threatens their function. If critical thinking and memory functions are consistently outsourced, neuroplasticity suggests that those abilities could weaken over time. The brain operates on a use-it-or-lose-it principle: pathways involved in critical thinking, factual memory,
